How to Choose the Perfect Sofa?

335Views

If you are in the market for purchasing a sofa, then you know it is not the easiest of decisions to make. With so many options in terms of style, material and colour, you may be confused about the best for your home.

And yet, a sofa is such a central piece in your living room that it demands your time, money, and effort. You can choose from a modern leather modular lounge or a cosy traditional fabric sofa at the other end of the sofa style spectrum – the objective would be the same – choose a sofa that is both functional and attractive.

Before heading out in search of the perfect sofa, take some time to consider how you spend your time at home on a day-to-day basis. Think about your lifestyle and your requirements for a sofa daily. Do you have young children and/or pets in which case you will require a sofa that is stain resistant and easy to clean? If your family lounges on the sofa watching TV then a sectional might be appropriate for you. You will want to consider a reclining sofa if you spend time lounging and reading books on your sofa. If you know what you are looking for, your search will require less time and effort.

Think about how and where you want to place your sofa in your living room. Will the sides be exposed, will the back of the sofa be visible, will it be against a wall or sit in the middle of the living room – knowing how you plan to orient your sofa will help you decide on a few factors such as size, style, height and width and help you decide on a sofa that matches your requirements.

The measurement of the living room area that you plan to have your sofa in cannot be emphasised enough. Not knowing what size of a sofa will fit your space can lead to an expensive mistake. Take some tape and paste it on the ground to identify how well the size you want to purchase fits the space. Don’t forget to measure height along with length and width. The wrong height may mean you cover a window or another piece of furniture adjacent to the sofa and let’s also not forget that you need to bring that sofa through your door and possibly up some steps – a size larger than what your doorway or stairwell can handle will be a disaster.

Pay attention to the type of material you want your sofa in. When choosing, think about who and for what purpose the sofa will be used and look formaterial that can cater to those requirements. While leather can be an elegant choice, it is good to know that leather reflects the temperature of the room, so, if your living room gets too warm during summer and too cold during colder months and your living room is not temperature controlled you will be uncomfortable in your sofa.
